Secularism is presented as government neutrality (or hostility) toward religion. As such, it is used to justify bans on religious symbols in public places. However, I argue that this conflates two issues: the relationship between church and state, and the relationship between the state and its citizens. This presentation explores the parallels between secularism and recent political developments in gender identity, which helps to illustrate why religious-apparel bans are so deeply disturbing to individuals impacted by them.
