Topic: "Sino-Capitalism - China's Reemergence, the Internationalization of the Yuan and the Future of the Global Order"
Speaker: Dr. Christopher A. McNally
Associate Professor of Political Economy, Chaminade University
Non-resident Fellow, East-West Center

As China's political economy gains in significance, its interactions with other major political economies and its efforts to internationalize the yuan will shape global values, institutions and policies, thereby structuring the international political economy. This seminar envisages China's reemergence as generating Sino-capitalism - a capitalist system that is already global in reach and that differs from the dominant liberal Anglo-American system of capitalism in important respects.

About the Speaker:
Christopher A. McNally is an Associate Professor of Political Economy at Chaminade University and Nonresident Fellow at the East-West Center in Honolulu, USA. His research focuses on comparative capitalisms, especially the nature and logic of China's capitalist transition. He is also working on a research project that studies the implications of China's capitalist reemergence on the global order.

He has held fellowships conducting fieldwork and research at the Asia Research Centre in West Australia, the Institute of Asia Pacific Studies at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences. He received his Ph.D. in political science from the University of Washington. He has edited four volumes, including an examination of China's political economy: China's Emergent Political Economy - Capitalism in the Dragon's Lair (Routledge, 2008). He also has authored numerous book chapters, policy analyses, editorials and articles in journals such as Business and Politics, Communist and Post-Communist Studies, Comparative Social Research and World Politics.

Please refer to the PAMI Bulletin Board (Shidler College of Business courtyard) and the PAMI website (www.shidler.hawaii.edu/pami) for the most updated schedule. The Shidler College of Business is accredited by AACSB International and has been consistently ranked in the top 25 for international business by U.S. News & World Report.

Topic: "Strengthening Collaboration between the U.S. and Indonesia through Hawaii"
Speaker: Amin Leiman
President, Hawaii Indonesia Chamber of Commerce

From geographic proximity to cultural sensitivity, Hawaii is the most logical focal point to strengthen collaboration between the U.S. and Indonesia in many areas. In this lecture, Amin will point out the many different areas where Hawaii can play significant roles in connecting the dots between the US and Indonesia.

About the Speaker:
Amin Leiman co-founded the Hawaii Indonesia Chamber of Commerce (HICHAM) in January 2010 as President. In this role, he provides oversight leadership in several key strategic areas, including membership diversity outreach optimization and business insights, and the achievement of the organization's strategic effectiveness objectives.

Starting his career in 1987 as an IT consultant/auditor, Amin spent eight years working at various Big Four accounting/consulting firms where he held a number of senior consultant and managerial roles. In 1994, taking his experience back to his native country, Amin was hired by the Bukit Group in Jakarta, Indonesia as a Managing Director for the company's three coconut oil manufacturing plants. Entrepreneurial in spirit, Amin was subsequently hired to establish Zyrex in 1996 after realizing the opportunities for making Zyrex the number one PC company in Indonesia. To date, Zyrex has maintained that position in the Indonesian PC market place. After having more than 25 years of diverse experience, he is currently an Audit Director of Information Technology at Hawaiian Electric Industries.

Amin has extensive cross-cultural experience having conversational ability of Japanese and Mandarin Chinese. He is fluent in Bahasa Indonesia.

Pacific Ocean Science and Technolgy (POST) Building, Room 723

Andr Berger, Emeritus Professor and Senior Researcher at the Universit Catholique de Louvain in Belgium, is a leading authority on past climate changes.

This lecture deals with the astronomical theory of paleoclimates, which aims to explain climate variations occurring with quasi-periodicities between 20,000 - 100,000 years. Such variations are recorded in deep-sea sediments, ice sheets and continental archives. The quasi-cycles originate in the astronomically driven changes in latitudinal and seasonal distribution of energy that the Earth receives from the Sun. These changes are amplified by feedback mechanisms involving the temperature relationships between albedo, water vapor, and vegetation.

Given the importance of insolation at the seasonal time scale for climate, Berger recommends that in order to understand what will happen to our future climate, we should attend to the oldest interglacial period archived in the EPICA Dome C ice core, about 780 thousand years before present.
