First Saturday at Kanewai Lo'i

Everyone is invited to the monthly community clean-up event at Ka Papa Lo'i o Kanewai Hawaiian Cultural Garden held on the First Saturday of each month. The garden provides experiential learning opportunities to school and community groups in the farming practices and culture of Native Hawaiians. Great opportunity for students to complete their community service requirement. Come dressed to get muddy. Light refreshments are provided. Contributions of food and drinks are welcomed.

Hawaii Pacific Gerontological Society's 15th Biennial Conference- Leaving a Legacy: Recreating our Work and Life Every two years, the Honolulu Pacific Gerontological Society (HPGS) Conference brings an opportunity for education on aging, networking and dialogue for professionals and the general public alike. This year, the 2-day conference will be held at the Hawaii Convention Center on September 15-16, 2008. The 2008 Biennial Conference is unique since HPGS will be collaborating with the Volunteer Resource Center of Hawaii (VRCH) to host an international event that will not only feature aging workshops and plenary sessions but also focus on volunteer recruitments, administration, disaster planning and first responders, and global aging issues. Advanced registration is required for the two day conference. Early bird registration is due before August 18, 2008. Discount rates are available for seniors, caregivers and students. "The New Solar System" ~ lecture by David Jewitt, Institute for Astronomy, University of Hawaii. Our perception of the Solar System has changed greatly in the last 20 years, in large part because of work done in Hawaii. We now recognize three major domains - those of the rocky planets, the giant planets and the comets - and, we are beginning to understand the connections and inter-relations between them. The region beyond Neptune, in particular, has emerged as an unexpectedly rich repository of clues about the formation and early evolution of the solar system. Prof. Jewitt will present a sweeping and accessible overview of the new solar system and of the latest ideas concerning its origin.

From the Valley of the Kings to Philae: Ancient and Modern Pilgrimages Professor Eugene Cruz-Uribe, University of Northern Arizona Thurs., Sept. 18, 2008 7:30 p.m. at the Doris Duke Theatre Co-sponsored by Archaeological Institute of America, Honolulu Academy of Arts and University of Hawai'i This illustrated lecture will deal with a series of research projects in Egypt mainly dealing with the subject of ancient pilgrimages to religious and other sites. Issues discussed will include the pilgrimage routes in ancient Egypt, why the Egyptians went on pilgrimages, how the Christians began to emulate pagan pilgrimage practices, and the conflicts that arose between the groups over control of the pilgrimage destination points.
