Germany Today for Junior Journalists Informational Meeting

The UHM Study Abroad Center invites University of Hawai‘i at Manoa journalism majors to apply for a nine-day intensive study program in Berlin, Germany. The program will familiarize young American journalists with current issues of the political, social, economic and cultural reality of today's Germany. Two applicants from UHM will be selected.

While in Berlin, the two successful applicants will observe German government officials and political figures, meet citizens of one of Europe's leading democracies, tour a famous publishing house and visit a school of journalism.

Applicants must be United States citizens, journalism majors at the University of Hawai‘i Manoa, and interested in Europe in general and the Federal Republic of Germany in particular. They must have an excellent academic background with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and the ability to contribute to discussions and bring in the American viewpoint. Strong social skills are needed to cope with group dynamics and integrate well into a group of 18 participants.

The program will be held in English. Expenses for ground transportation in Germany and accommodation and meals during the study tour will be provided. Flight costs up to a $600.00 maximum will be reimbursed. Students will pay for their beverages and personal expenses such as phone calls, checking e-mail from internet cafes, pay-TV, gifts, etc. During the study tour a representative from the Institut fur Auslandsbeziehungen will be present to assist and translate. Submit the following to the Study Abroad Center in Moore 115 by April 5, 2005: 1. A cover sheet with your name, university, school and home address, school and home telephone numbers, fax number and e-mail address. 2. A resume. 3. A one-page essay addressing each of these three issues: -Why do you want to participate in the program? -What do you hope to get out of it? -What are your long-term career goals? 4. Three writing samples 5. A UHM transcript 6. A reference letter from a journalism professor.
