Land-Use Change and Land Degredation in Northeast Thailand Lecture
May 12, 12:00pm - 1:30pmManoa Campus, Burns 3012
This talk by Patma Vityakon is based on the recently finished interdisciplinary research project "Land-use pattern and associated land degradation in undulating terrain of Northeast Thailand." The design of the project will be described and some key findings presented on existing forms of agriculture and land degradation resulting from conversion of forest to agricultural fields over the past century. Examples of land-use change at the regional, village and landscape levels are given. Land degradation is described based on the comparative analysis between forest (original land use) and agriculture. Land degradation indicators used are nutrient balance, soil erosion and soil organic matter. Finally, agroecosystem sustainability will be discussed.
