Backlash: Effects of 9/11 on Muslims and Arabs Living in the U.S.

June 16, 12:00pm - 1:00pm
Manoa Campus, Burns Hall 3012, East-West Center

Neeraj Kaushal, assistant professor, School of Social Work, Columbia University, will present a research study investigating the effect of the September 11th terrorists' attacks on the employment, earnings and location choices of first- and second-generation Arabs and Muslims living in the U.S. She and her co-authors conducted a multivariate regression analysis with a difference-in-differences research design and found that September 11th was not associated with the employment and hours of work of Arabs and Muslims. However, September 11th was associated with an eight percent decline in the real wage and weekly earnings of Muslims and Arabs. Estimates also suggest that the terrorists' attacks reduced the internal migration of Arabs and Muslims within the U.S.

An economist by training, Neeraj Kaushals research focuses on how policies and events affect the well-being of low-income families with special emphasis on immigrants. Her recent work includes the effect of the 1996 welfare reform on immigrant well-being. Her research has been published in the Journal of Labor Economics, Journal of Health Economics, Health Services Research, Journal Policy Analysis and Management, Journal of Urban Economics and Journal of Population Economics. She also writes a monthly column for The Economic Times, Indias largest financial newspaper.
