Reconstructing Memories Art Exhibition
November 5, 2006 - December 13, 2006Manoa Campus, University of Hawai'i Art Gallery
How do we remember our experiences? Do our memories change over time? Why do we silence or purge memories of catastrophic events for the perceived benefit of the next generation? How do we recall and re-interpret the experiences and memories of other people? How do we construct historical narratives based on our memories?
For the exhibition "Reconstructing Memories," twelve artists consider the relationship between memory and history, and demonstrate the fragility and tenuous nature of human memory, upon which history is based. Many of the artists draw inspiration from the cultural depositories of knowledge, the stories of their families, or visits to historical sites. Their multi-media artworks recall tales and episodes of history, especially those born of catastrophe, which might easily fade away. By considering core issues of constructing historical narratives and the obscuring of cultural and personal memory, the artists were able to recreate family or collective history and at the same time, question the nature of the historical process.
The artists include: Katsushige Nakahashi (Japan); Sally Clark, Binh Danh, Ian Everard, James Fee, Alejándro Gonzalez Iñárritu, Robin Kandel, (U.S.); and Gaye Chan, Kaili Chun, John Morita, Masami Teraoka, and Lynne Yamamoto (Hawai'i). Aaron Kerner, assistant professor, Cinema Department at San Francisco State University, is curator of Reconstructing Memories.
