A Streetcar Named Desire

November 19, 2:00pm - 4:45pm
Manoa Campus, Kennedy Theatre

By Tennessee Williams;Directed by Lurana Donnels O’Malley. Not seen at Kennedy Theatre since 1973, A Streetcar Named Desire is often considered Tennessee Williams’s greatest play. Streetcar premiered on Broadway in 1947 and won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The 1951 film by Elia Kazan won four Oscars out of its twelve nominations. Set in New Orleans, the play is the story of the conflict between Blanche DuBois (clinging to and haunted by the ghosts of her past) and Stanley Kowalski (her rough but vibrant brother-in-law). The scenic design is inspired by the work of New Orleans artist and photographer Johnny Donnels and some of his art will be on view in the lobby. A screening of the film The Pink Satin Suit, about his life and work, will be held on Thursday Oct. 26 at 6:30 p.m. in the Yukiyoshi Room.
