ENERGY PERSPECTIVES: VIEWS FROM HAWAII AND BRAZIL
FUTURE ENERGY INITIATIVES FOR THE STATE OF HAWAII by Maurice Kaya, Chief Technology Officer, State of Hawaii Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism.
Earlier in 2006, Governor Linda Lingle signed several far-reaching energy bills into law. These laws have the potential to fundamentally change the energy landscape in Hawaii, accelerating our much-discussed, but overly-slow transition to a renewable energy future. Our future economic security is at stake. This talk will describe elements contained in these policies to achieve aggressive, near-term savings in energy efficiency, identify enablers for renewable electricity, achieve targets for biofuels use, establish a renewable hydrogen program, and finally, empower Hawaii consumers to make informed decisions. The role that HNEI and the University of Hawaii can play in this emerging energy future will be discussed.
ETHANOL AND RENEWABLE HYDROGEN: A BRAZILIAN PERSPECTIVE by Dr. J. Fernando Contadini, Renewable Energy Consultant, Clamper and Petrobras, Brazil.
Presenting and discussing the Brazilian experience on fuel ethanol production and utilization, Dr. Contadini will show the government and industries initiatives being taken to improve the accessibility, efficiency and sustainability of his country’s energetic matrix. The idea is to benefit from the existing infrastructure and knowledge to produce hydrogen from biomass residue, and to use ethanol as a renewable hydrogen carrier and/or as a main fuel for direct oxidation into fuel cells.
