Nonlinear Quantum Hydrodynamics

November 22, 9:30am - 10:15am
Manoa Campus, Watanabe Hall, Rm. 417

The Department of Physics and Astronomy, Solid State Physics Lecture: Prof. Peter W. Engels, Washington State University, to speak on "Nonlinear Quantum Hydrodynamics, Experimental Investigations with Bose-Einstein Condensates."

This lecture will give an introduction to Bose-Einstein condensation and the speaker will adjust to the level of understanding both for undergraduate and graduate students.

Abstract: Over the past few years, experiments with ultracold quantum gases have become a major theme in modern physics. They display fundamental quantum mechanical behavior of a macroscopic object, are governed by intriguing nonlinear dynamics, and provide a new tool with which one can model complex condensed matter scenarios. About two years ago I started a new ultracold atom laboratory at Washington State University (WSU). Despite the technical finesse required to cool gases down to nano-Kelvin temperatures, the machine is very reliably producing Bose-Einstein condensates since May 2006. This has opened up a completely new field of experimental research for WSU. In my talk I will give a general introduction to the field, talk about current experiments in my lab, including quantum shock, Faraday waves and impact oscillator behavior, and point out future directions, involving the planned addition of Fermions and optical lattices.
