Upper Egypt, Late Antique Aesthetics, and Transformative Conservation at the Red and White Monasteries
Conservation and archaeological work at the Red and White Monasteries (Sohag, Upper Egypt) founded in the 4th century AD, in the last few years have revealed dramatic late antique wall paintings (Red Monastery), and remnants of them – and of their destruction (White Monastery). The remoteness of the sites and the dry climate of Egypt have preserved their written and material remains to an exceptional degree. This illustrated lecture discusses the newly found painting and and architectural sculpture, the best surviving from the late ancient world.
