Kaho'olawe Future with Sol P. Kaho'ohalahala.
After more than 50 years of use by the U.S. military as a bombing target, the island of Kaho'olawe finally began the process of reverting to the State in 1994, when the U.S. Navy signed a Memorandum of Understanding regarding the island's cleanup, restoration, access, and transfer of control.
The Kaho'olawe Island Reserve Commission (KIRC) now represents the state in all matters pertaining to the island. Sol P. Kaho'ohalahala is executive director of the Kaho'olawe Island Reserve Commission (KIRC). Kaho'ohalahala has been an active member of the Protect Kaho'olawe Ohana for 28 years, served two terms in the Hawai'i State Legislature, two terms on the Maui County Council and on numerous boards and committees.
