Sakamaki Lecture Series: Pacific Overtures
August 16, 7:00pm - 9:00pmManoa Campus, Yukiyoshi Room, Krauss Hall 012
Pacific Overtures: Images of Hawai'i and the South Pacific in American Fiction with Alan Cheuse.
The first important representations of Pacific life in American literature come to us in the work of Melville. Mitchner popularized the subject. World War Two writers and beyond have made the subject matter an integral part of mainland fiction. Contemporary Hawaiian writers have given new turns to the same material, working it from within rather than from the outside.
Lecturer Alan Cheuse is the author of three novels, including The Grandmothers' Club and The Light Possessed, three collections of short stories, a memoir (Fall Out of Heaven) and a collection of essays (Listening to the Page: Adventures in Reading and Writing).
