"Transforming Graduate Students Into Colleagues"-New Student Orientation and Graduate Assistant Training for the Department of Sociology.
Graduate education includes socialization to the norms, values, and practices of a discipline. Each semester the Graduate Sociological Students' Association (GSSA) serves as peer-mentors for new graduate students. At this meeting, senior sociology graduate students will share their knowledge, including teaching experience; give insider information on graduate student life; explain professional opportunities; and provide moral and emotional encouragement.
Good mentoring is indispensable for student retention and success. While this orientation is designed specifically for sociology graduate students, we welcome students from all disciplines. The training module on graduate assistants (GA, TA, and RAs) offers students' insights into the experiences and challenges of teaching undergraduate courses. Guest speakers include the Dept. Chair, Dr. Bill Wood, Graduate Chair, Dr. Sunki Chai, and Jennifer Matsuda, Dept. Chair, Student Athlete Academic Services.
Includes Refreshments.
