INTRO "Centennial Project": Graduate Student Sociological Association

Public General Meeting for all Department of Sociology graduate students and faculty, as well as interdisciplinary colleagues.

This meeting is an introduction to the "Centennial Project" organized to advance graduate sociology students’ professional development through increased faculty and student interaction. This project is designed to work collaboratively within the aims and goals of the department of sociology strategic plan. Student and faculty engagement in colloquia, informal “brown bag” lunch meetings, peer mentor training for conflict resolution, a monthly department open house, and off site social events are aligned with department and UHM dates and activities to encourage greater participation.

Guest Speaker: Dr. Jenny Sadek Samaan (photo), Director of International Education at the University of Hawai‘i. Dr. Samaan received her PhD in higher education administration from UH Manoa with a focus on internationalization. Friday she will discuss international activities, partnership agreements, and the value of social interaction within a global community at the University of Hawai‘i as efforts to “internationalize” the campus experience.

The international dimension to students’ education positions the University of Hawai‘i as one of the world’s foremost multicultural centers for global and indigenous studies. The UH community includes faculty/staff, visiting scholars, and students from throughout the world.

Undergraduate sociology students are warmly invited to attend. Graduate students support undergraduate education as course assistants, graduate teaching assistants (TA/GA), and lecturers.
