Watershed Modeling Approaches for TMDL Development: The Virginia Experience.

Computer models have been used extensively for the development of TMDLs in Virginia. So far, the majority of the TMDLs that have been developed are related to poor benthic community health and excess bacteria. The two models used most often to address these impairments are the Hydrological Simulation Program-FORTRAN (HSPF) for bacteria and the Generalized Watershed Loading Functions (GWLF) for benthic community impairments where the dominant stressor is sediment. This seminar will provide an overview of the application of these models for TMDL development in Virginia. The overview will include an examination of the impairment (model selection), input data preparation, model calibration, model application, and development of pollutant load allocations. The intent of this seminar is to share the Virginia experience of TMDL development in order to generate ideas for the development of TMDLs in Hawaii.
