Mezzo-soprano Maya Hoover will present her Hawaii debut recital with pianist José Meléndez in a performance of songs by Guastavino, Schonthal, Rossini, Tosti, and Montsalvage.

Maya Hoover, an Assistant Professor of Voice at the UH Manoa Music Department, is a leading scholar and researcher of Latin American art song, and an active performer, teacher, clinician, music education philosopher, and author. Her accomplishments in the performance and teaching arenas have earned her invitations to appear around the world, and her specialty in the music of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries has led her to collaborations with some of today's leading composers.

José Meléndez is an active pianist, coach, accompanist, and conductor in opera, recitals, and concert work in the United States, South America, Central America, Asia, and Puerto Rico. He currently serves as staff accompanist/pianist for the prestigious Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia, and he is in his fourth season as Assistant Conductor and Principal Coach for Opera New Jersey. He serves as principal coach and pianist for the Puerto Rico Metropolitan Opera Council District and Regional Auditions, a position he has held for thirteen seasons.
