Atamira Dance Collective

February 10, 4:00pm - 6:00pm
Manoa Campus, Kennedy Theatre

Atamira Dance Collective's Ngai Tahu 32 is a powerful and unique contemporary dance work incorporating visual imagery, set design, and a powerful sound-score.

Following one man's journey through time and whakapapa (genealogy/tribal links) to deliver a soul to a new generation, Ngai Tahu 32 is a masterful work by choreographer Louise Potiki Bryant.

Drawing on her personal family history and whakapapa, Ngai Tahu 32 not only reflects thoughts and experiences of contemporary Maori (the indigenous people of New Zealand), but is a universal tale of struggle, loss, and ultimately, redemption. In addition to Ngai Tahu 32 Atamira will perform a number of shorter works from their repetoire, including "Whakairo," "Kohatu," excerpts from Memoirs of Active Service and an opening moteatea or chant. Atamira Dance Collective presents outstanding Maori contemporary dance theatre. Made up of leading young Maori choreographers and dancers, Atamira Dance Collective's work draws on Maori history, legends and concepts, personal stories and whakapapa. Acclaimed for their innovative and cutting-edge productions, Atamira Dance Collective is at the forefront of the Contemporary Dance Scene in New Zealand. Drawing on their unique perspective of Maori culture and heritage, Atamira Dance Collective are known for the distinct and powerful style they bring to Contemporary Dance. Program: Te Whenua – an excerpt of Atamira's newest work 'Whakairo' choreographed by Moss Patterson. Based on the Maori art of carving.
