New Prospects For Studying New Matter
February 21, 3:30pm - 4:30pmManoa Campus, Watanabe Hall, Rm. 112
The Department of Physics and Astronomy Colloquium: Dr. Jason Kumar, University of California, Irvine, to speak on "New Prospects For Studying New Matter."
Abstract:
The Standard Model is an excellent model for the fundamental interactions of particle physics. Nevertheless, observed phenomena such as electroweak symmetry breaking, dark matter and the matter/anti-matter asymmetry provide challenges which must be solved by the introduction of new matter. A variety of theoretical ideas provide hints as to the nature of this new matter, and a variety of experiments are poised to observe this new physics. We review some of the evidence for new matter, and then focus on theoretical ideas (such as string theory) which suggest that new matter can influence matter/anti-matter asymmetry and be observed at the upcoming Large Hadron Collider.
