CYBERFORUM: Computer-Mediated Collective Action

March 17, 1:30pm - 3:00pm
Manoa Campus, Hemenway Theatre

The "Cyberforum" held over 2-days, March 17 & 18, involves global and system-wide linkages, interdisciplinary collaboration, and community outreach and support.

Senior Research Sociologist at Microsoft, Marc A. Smith, PhD, discusses the social organization of online communities and computer mediated interaction. In addition to authoring and co-authoring publications on cybersociology, Smith has developed a web interface to the Netscan engine that allows researchers to study Usernet newsgroups. This and other programs provide the means to gather historical data on the development of social cyberspaces.

The University of Hawai'i joins many prominent universities in hosting this renowned speaker and author. In addition to general student and community participation, we encourage faculty to incorporate Cyberforum events into classroom schedules.

A live videoconference to the Philippines from 4-5:50 PM, follows this presentation, but because of limited space pre-registration is required. *For more information see: "CYBERFORUM:Global Connections in Sociology" listed at 4 PM, today, March 17.

In partnership with our community sponsor, the Assistive Technology Centers of Hawai'i, Executive Director, Michael Jones, will also comment on cyber communities and how technology "equalizes abilities".

This event organized by the Graduate Student Sociological Association (GSSA) is made possible through generous sponsorship by the following UH and community organizations: UH College of Social Sciences, Department of Sociology, School of Communication, SAPFB,Center for Philippine Studies, Assistive Technology Center of Hawai'i (ATCH), World Bank Global Distance Learning Center, Philippine e-Learning Society, Ayala Foundation of the Philippines, the Consuelo Foundation, and many others.
