The Relationship Between Education and Fertility, Women and Men Born 1940-64,
Theory and a Country Example

Ronald R. Rindfuss
Senior Fellow, East-West Center
Tuesday, March 18, 2008
Noon – 1:00 pm
Burns Hall, Room 3012

We should know, but surprisingly, relatively little is actually known about the relationship between education and completed fertility in low fertility countries, and especially the trend in this relationship over time. An inverse relationship is the traditional expectation for women, but the topic has been left largely unexplored for at least a generation. And for men the topic has been almost completely neglected. The theoretical reasons for the relationship will be discussed, including feedbacks from fertility to education. The different expectations for men and women will be emphasized. Then data from Norwegian population registers for cohorts 1940-64 will be used to illustrate different, and perhaps surprising, trends for women and men. There will also be discussion as to why the education and completed fertility relationship can be examined for so few countries, and especially so few Asian countries.

Ronald R. Rindfuss is a Senior Fellow in the Research Program of the East-West Center. His research interests include family, fertility and the relationship between population processes and the environment. In addition to his interests in institutional aspects of low fertility, he has been working on understanding the profound changes in family behavior that have been occurring in Japan. He is also using agent-based models to analyze the relationships among population growth, out-migration, remittances, and land-use change in his long-term study site in Northeast Thailand.
