“Public Health as a Lens for Education”

Mamo Kim, Department of Political Science, UHM
Shannon Hirose-Wong, Office of Public Health Studies & Office of Medical Education, John A. Burns School of Medicine, UHM

It is easy to recognize dehumanization when it manifests in actions as blatant as America’s treatment of Iraqis, or in the clash of tribes at Darfur, or in the inattentiveness of the AIDS epidemic in Africa; but in the United States, we seem to be blind to the dehumanization of our own children and population when it comes to confronting a system of education that artificially forces our attention into the unnatural state of fragmentation and schizophrenia. The University of Hawai’i at Manoa, along with its counterparts in higher education institutions across the nation, is complicit in this system of dehumanization despite its motto, “Above all nations is humanity.” In this presentation, we will explore how that is so and discuss with seminar participants how we might collectively work towards improving this situation in Hawaii, utilizing “public health” as a lens for K-20 education.
