UH Climate Research Center Celebrates 10 Years of Accomplisments
The International Pacific Research Center (IPRC) is welcoming visitors to its opening ceremony, which will feature remarks by dignitaries from the University of Hawaii, Japan, and NASA. The ceremony will include a retrospective on IPRC's history and scientific accomplishments and a view of the future of IPRC-related science.
The IPRC was established at the University of Hawai`i at Mānoa as a Japan–United States partnership on research into climate change under the “US–Japan Common Agenda for Cooperation in Global Perspective.”
The 10 years of research at IPRC have aimed to improve understanding and prediction of the variations in the climate system on a wide range of space and time scales, including long-term climate trends.
Most research is conducted through analysis of existing data sets from satellites and other observing systems, and through the application of computer model simulations of the climate system. The emphasis is on studying aspects of the climate system directly relevant to the Asia-Pacific region. One focus is on understanding key phenomena rooted in the tropical ocean and atmosphere system, such as the El Niño–Southern Oscillation and tropical cyclones.
Concerns about human-induced climate change are addressed through modeling studies of past climate and through assessment of model predictions of future trends in climate, including the climate-change outlook for Hawai'i.
Today, the IPRC has grown into a multi-million-dollar, state-of-the-art center for climate research. It is truly a joint enterprise among the University of Hawai`i, the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology, NASA and NOAA.
