HONOLULU – The University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa's Colleges of Arts and Sciences are pleased to present the Universal Values for a Democratic Society―Nisei Veterans Endowed Forum Series, featuring guest speaker Benjamin J. Cayetano.

Cayetano is the fifth governor of the State of Hawai‘i and the first Filipino-American to serve as a state governor in the United States. Born on November 14, 1939, Cayetano was raised in Kalihi by his father, an immigrant from the Philippines.

After graduating from Farrington High School, Cayetano attended Los Angeles Harbor College and later transferred to UCLA where he earned degrees in Political Science and American History. He later pursued a law degree from Loyola University Law School where he graduated in 1971.

In 1974, Cayetano was elected to the Hawai‘i State Legislature House of Representatives, followed by election to the Senate in 1978. From there he moved to the lieutenant governorship in 1986. Beginning in 1994, Cayetano served two terms as governor, holding his post as the highest-ranking Filipino-American official in the country.

Universal Values for a Democratic Society―Nisei Veterans Endowed Forum Series was established by the Colleges of Arts and Sciences to foster thoughtful discussions on values and their role in enhancing a democratic society.

The forum is open to the public. Boxed lunch and beverage will be available for $8. Parking is available for $4 with validation at the JCCH parking garage.

The deadline to RSVP and place a lunch order is May 5. Call Laarni Gedo in the Colleges of Arts & Sciences, Office of Community and Alumni Relations at 956-5790 to RSVP and place lunch orders.
