Demo of Accessible Voting Machine
September 12, 3:00pm - 3:00pmManoa Campus, QLCSS 013
The Mānoa campus community is invited to a drop-in presentation on election accessibility for voters with disabilities, Monday, September 15, 2008 from 10:00 to 1:00 in the KOKUA Program office in the ground floor, room 013 of the Queen Lili`uokalani Center for Student Services. Anthony Akamine from the Office of Elections (in conjunction with the State Disability and Communication Access Board) will be talking to interested persons about the accessibility of the election process, polling sites and the voting machine. Persons can have a hands-on demonstration of the voter machine that is adapted for use by persons who are blind and visually impaired, have print disabilities and mobility restrictions. This accessible machine is available at the Campus Center Room 306 for casting of absentee ballots and at all polling places. In 2004, Hawai`i improved accessibility in the voting process by being one of the first states to utilize electronic balloting with accessible machines, thereby allowing blind persons to be able to vote independently by casting a secret ballot for the first time.
