Writing w/ Thread dance demonstration & reception

A southwest Chinese minority dance demonstration by Diane Letoto and the Phoenix Dance Chamber kicks off the special events for the exhibition "Writing with Thread: Traditional Textiles of Southwest Chinese Minorities" on view at the University of Hawai'i Art Gallery. A reception will follow the dance presentation. This spectacular exhibition features more than 500 objects including historically significant clothing and silver ornaments from a collection of southwest Chinese ethnic minority costumes unmatched in the world. Through an arresting visual feast of exquisite and rare costumes produced by 15 ethnic groups and nearly 100 subgroups, "Writing with Thread" celebrates the diverse and splendidly woven and embroidered handicrafts of these people. The public is invited.
