Ancient Customs, Ancient Stories
September 22, 2008 - October 31, 2008Manoa Campus, Hamilton Library Bridge Gallery
The exhibit, Ancient Customs, Ancient Stories: Lampung Ceremonial Textiles and Objects is curated by Garrett and Bronwen Solyom as part of the 11th Biennial Textile Society of America Symposium.
Described by generations of foreign ethnographers and collectors as “ship cloths,” they were sometimes said to represent the “ship of the dead.”
In the exhibit, remnants of house architecture, ceremonial furniture and objects, mats and beadwork are arranged according to four themes that together suggest “ship cloths” represent a very different world.
