“Questions of Land and Democracy: The Political Production of Space (Can We Share Sacred Space?)”

Dr. Andrew Arno

Dept. Anthropology
University of Hawaii at Manoa

This talk draws on the semiotics and phenomenology of Henri Lefebvre and C.S. Peirce, as well as examples from Fijian and American politics, to explore the role of sacred homelands in democratic societies. The wider problem is the tragic conflict, with examples around the world, of equally valid, but at times conflicting, claims of sacred homelands and democratic citizenship rights in multiethnic societies. The ongoing political production of a homeland as monumental sacred space involves the work of poets and graphic artists, and arguably can provide the affective framework within which political struggles for justice and fairness proceed with some hope of success.
