October 6, 12:30pm - 2:00pmManoa Campus, George Hall 213
A colloquium entitled, "Neither Citizens nor Foreigners: Filipino Sugar Plantation Workers in Hawaii" by Dr. JoAnna Poblete-Cross.
As the last lawful and willing source of labor for Hawaii sugar plantations in the second half of the twentieth century, Filipinos were able to access unique mobility opportunities unavailable to other worker groups. This talk will focus on a specific Hawaiian Sugar Planters Association recruitment program that was only available to Filipino labor migrants, knows as return passage, due to their colonial status.
