In October, Hawai'i Bibliovision features Gayatri Gopinath, currently Associate Professor of Social and Cultural Analysis at New York University. Professor Gopinath was the Joseph Keene Chadwick Lecturer of AY 2006-2007. Professor Gopinath specializes in Asian Diaspora Literatures and Cultures, Anglophone and Postcolonial Literatures, Feminist Theory, Queer Theory, Popular Culture. Her book, Impossible Desires: Queer Diasporas and South Asian Public Cultures (Duke University Press, 2005) has been very well-received. One critic wrote that Impossible Desires is a fascinating and lively book and lucidly written. Another scholar had the following assessment: “Her lively, accessible writing ranges from British-Asian music, through Bollywood/Hollywood to the work of Pakistani writer Ishmat Chugtai. Her analysis of films including Fire and Monsoon Wedding is a particular highlight.” The title of Professor Gopinath’s talk for the Joseph Keene Chadwick Lectures Series was “Queer Regions: Re-visioning Space and Sexualities in Transnational Times”.
