2008 Fall Faculty Lecture Series

"The Early House of Honolulu," a faculty lecture by Spencer Leineweber, Architecture.

The current research concerns the domestic sites of the ali`i (chiefs) and the ABCFM (American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, a.k.a. Congregational missionaries) as expressions of cultural identity and positioning for power during mid-19th century Hawai'i.

This presentation is a narrative of the early 19th century encounters between foreigners and indigenous people. Social exchanges informed the research including greeting, gifting, proxemics, pageantry, sexuality, symbolism and kinship.

Rich with primary source material of text, oral expression and artistic representation, the difficulty is in deciphering the indigenous experience of these encounters and understanding the role architecture played in these exchanges.
