“Diversity as Public Good: Buddhist Reflections on the Meaning of Difference”
Dr. Peter Hershock
Coordinator, Asian Studies Development Program East-West Center
The contemporary dynamics of globalization and complex interdependence are at once multiplying and magnifying differences, both within and among societies. Among the key effects of these dynamics are unprecedentedly uneven geographies of development and wealth; no less unprecedented, technologically mediated freedoms of choice; the emergence of a “post-industrial” attention economy; a deepening association of the optimal with the optional; and the proliferation of wholly elective lifestyles, identities, and communities. All of this raises critical questions about the means-to and meaning-of equity. In this talk, I’ll make use of Buddhist resources to suggest that realizing greater equity requires enhancing diversity as a global relational commons and public good.
