LECTURE TITLE: ‘Filipino-American’: Naming the Shift from Imperial Sovereignty to Permanent War in Ethnic Subject-Constitution

DESCRIPTION: Oscar V. Campomanes will investigate the intersections of empire, ethnicity, nation and identity through an exploration of the politics of naming. As he points out, scholars have observed that before being turned into an ethnic designation in American multiculturalism, ‘Filipino-American’ was the name for a genocidal colonial war by which the USA forcibly annexed the Philippines as its major extraterritorial dominion after 1898. Professor Campomanes is an Associate Professor of English at the Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines.
