Astronaut Stan Love Presentation
October 28, 7:30pm - 9:00pmManoa Campus, POST Building Room 723
"Island in Space: The STS-122 Space Shuttle Mission to the International Space Station"
In addition to his talk, Dr. Love will present a meteorite given to him by his HIGP colleagues that he took to space along with a state of Hawaii flag. This is the unusual case of a meteorite that came from space, went back again, then came back to Earth with an astronaut's help.
Astronaut Stanley G. Love served as mission specialist on STS-122 Atlantis (February 7-20, 2008), the 24th Shuttle mission to visit the International Space Station. Dr. Love performed two spacewalks during the 12-day mission, which completed 203 Earth orbits.
Dr. Love holds a PhD in Astronomy from the University of Washington. He worked as a Post-Doctoral Researcher with Dr. Klaus Keil at the Hawaii Institute of Geophysics and Planetology in 1994 researching the formation of meteoritic chondrules and the collisional evolution of asteroids. Dr. Love returns to Hawaii as the invited keynote speaker at the 7th annual Astronaut Lacy Veach Day of Discovery, an event cosponsored by the Hawaiian Electric Company, Hawaii Space Grant Consortium, Punahou School, the Center for Microbial Oceanography Research and Education, and the family of Lacy Veach. In addition to his talk at U.H. Manoa, Dr. Love has visits scheduled at local elementary and middle schools.
