What Islam? Whose Islam? From Misogyny to Equality: Advocating for Women's Rights in Islam

Zainah Anwar will share the Sisters in Islam experience in claiming a public space and creating a public voice of Muslim women to give an understanding of Islam that recognizes equality and justice,  and challenging the use of Islam in laws and policies that discriminate against women. She believes in the possibilities within Islam for reform to take place. Within the context of the modern world, this effort must be opened to all and can no longer remain the sole monopoly of the religious authorities.

About our guest
Ms. Anwar is the co-founder of Sisters in Islam, and currently serves on the organization's Board of Directors. She was also formerly a member of the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia, and is now Project Director of Musawah, a Global Movement for Equality and Justice in the Muslim Family. In addition to working directly with lawyers on the conflict of jurisdiction between the sharia and civil courts in Malaysia, Ms. Anwar has written and spoken extensively on issues of politics and civil liberties in Malaysia as well as internationally.
