November 21, 4:00pm - 5:30pm
Mānoa Campus, Imin Center-Jefferson Hall, East-West Center Add to Calendar

Renowned for their mesmerizing choreography and fine detail, Indonesian, dance masters I Made Sidia (Bali) and Baghawan Ciptoning (Java) will perform at the East-West Center with the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa’s two fine gamelan ensembles.

About the performances
A gamelan is an Indonesian music ensemble, typically composed of gongs, chimes, xylophones, drums and bamboo flutes, along with bowed and plucked string instruments. Javanese styles of music and dance tend to be more serene, while Balinese forms tend more toward the dramatic.

Celebrated dancer and choreographer Baghawan Ciptoning from Solo, Indonesia, will first perform several Javanese dance pieces, including the Bugis warrior dance and the Gathutkaca gandrung, which depicts the emotional turmoil of a hero in the ancient Sanskrit epic Mahabharata. Ciptoning’s work explores an unusual repertoire of classicism and inventive approach to faith and fantasy, drawing inspiration and technique from ceremonial Javanese court dance. In addition to Indonesia, he has performed extensively in the United States, India, Japan, Thailand, Finland and Malaysia.

Acclaimed Balinese dancer I Made Sidia [Ee Mah-deh See-dee-ah] will then perform four topeng, or masked dances, depicting ancient stories of mythical kings and princes. Mr. Sidia, who has been training in the performing arts since the age of 10, is currently a leading Balinese puppeteer, masked dancer, musician and choreographer. He has performed in Australia, the U.S. and Europe.

The performances are presented by the East-West Center Arts Program and the Hawai`i Gamelan Society, and are part of the EWC’s 50th anniversary year celebrations.
