Orientation for UHM W Focus Instructors

March 17, 2:00pm - 4:00pm
Mānoa Campus, Saunders 443 Conference Room Add to Calendar

Are you teaching a Writing (W) Focus class for the first time? Or do you want some fresh ideas? Join Mānoa Writing Program Director Jim Henry for an orientation to the latest developments in writing pedagogy that will help you incorporate the W Focus into your syllabus and teaching plans. Content includes an introduction to the principles of process pedagogy with a focus on Hallmark #2 ("The class provides interaction between the instructor and students while students do assigned writing."). Participants will take away tips for responding to student writing, establishing effective peer review, using rubrics effectively, prompting meta-cognitive work among student writers, integrating self-editing checklists, and alerting students to online tools for writing, editing, and improving grammar and usage. Ideas for using Laulima will be illustrated with student examples, and novel feedback mechanisms such as mp3s will be presented. Participants will engage in "writing to learn" activities as part of this orientation.
