Manoa Bollywood Afternoons: 'Maqbool' (2004)

'Maqbool' is a brilliant transportation of Shakespeare's Macbeth into the murky underworld of Bombay. In Vishal Bhardwaj's stunning adaptation, Maqbool (Irrfan Khan) is the chief lieutenant to gang leader Abbaji (Pankaj Kapoor). Once loyal, Maqbool's obsession with his godfather's mistress (Tabu) dangerously lures him toward new ambitions for power.

The brooding film is a story of passion, politics, seduction, crime, and redemption, and ably demonstrates not only the universality of Shakespearean drama, but also Bollywood's capacity to produce sophisticated cinema.
