Sakamaki Extraordinary Lecture on aging in Asia
July 20, 7:00pm - 8:30pmMānoa Campus, School of Architecture Auditorium
Aging in Asia and the Pacific Region: Highlights of Regional Trends, Responses and Global Directions, with Lonny E. Carlile, Kathryn L. Braun, and Colette V. Browne.
Throughout the world, populations are growing older. Asia’s older adult population is projected to reach 950 million, equating to 17.5 percent of its population. Surpassing Europe, Asia is now on the brink to becoming the “oldest†region in the world. By 2030, one of every five citizens in the U.S. will be 60 years of age and over. Hawai'i, the nation’s 50th state and by far its most multicultural, boasts the longest life expectancy in the U.S. Extended life is a triumph of economic, medical, and public advances. However, issues around individual and population aging are complex and are challenging our current economic, medical, and social systems.
In this lecture, speakers will highlight aging trends in three East Asian countries that are experiencing rapid population aging – Japan, China and South Korea. This presentation will then turn to aging in Hawai‘i and the Pacific Region. Regional responses to individual and population aging will be discussed, with implications for political and economic growth and stability, health care and family structure.
LONNY E. CARLILE, is associate professor, Asian Studies Program, University of Hawai‘i at Manoa.
KATHRYN L. BRAUN, is professor, Office of Public Health Studies, John A. Burns School of Medicine, University of Hawai‘i at Manoa.
COLETTE V. BROWNE, is professor, Myron B. Thompson School of Social Work, and interim director, Center on Aging, Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Education, University of Hawai‘i at Manoa.
Sakamaki Extraordinary Lectures 2011 support Outreach College's summer theme, ADVANCING ASIA-PACIFIC, and provide an enriching public forum for viewpoints and discussion prior to Hawai‘i's hosting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit.
