Presentation on Urbanization and Intergenerational Relations

This talk aims to answer the question of whether the Chinese society has already shifted from patrilineal society to bilateral society through fieldwork conducted in Jinshidi, a village of Northern Zhejiang province. Research by Dr. Shi demonstrates that the Chinese family and kinship norms have not changed as much as the conventional wisdom argues. Rather, patrilineal, patrilocal and patriarchic norms have been stronger in the post-Mao era, even though China has faced a dramatic transformation.
