Human Rights Violations in North Korea

March 15, 4:00pm - 5:30pm
Manoa Campus, Center for Korean Studies Add to Calendar

The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea has been portrayed in different ways in the international community, reflecting the security, humanitarian, and human rights concerns of the world. Prof. Tae-Ung Baik of the William S. Richardson School of Law attempts to gauge the seriousness of human rights violations by looking into the criminal process in the country. The criminal justice system and the actual criminal process in North Korea are not completely known to the world even at this time. Nevertheless, it is important and necessary to analyze the actual processes of the panel system for a better understanding of the human rights violations in the society. By comparing what the law stipulates as procedure to how the procedure is actually practiced, Prof. Baik provides an explanation of North Korean criminal procedure and human rights practice.
