Synopsis
Yoanna, who runs her own company, is insulted in a phone booth by a stranger named Yong-ho. Looking for a job, Yong-ho applies to a magazine named The Modern Woman, unaware that that Yoanna is the company’s boss. She hires him intending to repay the humiliation she suffered. His masculinity captivates her, however, and she ends up marrying him, becoming a housekeeper, and giving him the company.

What made Koreans laugh in the late 1950s and early 1960s? If popular movies are any indication, you’ll find some answers to this question in the Center for Korean Studies spring 2012 film series. This semester’s program is stocked with a half-dozen representative family and romantic comedies produced by well-known directors of the period.
