Environmental and Water Engineering Research Lecture

Dr. Luminda Gunawardhana, Tohoku University: To understand and prevent/minimize urban thermal pollution, this study attempted to develop an operational spatial scale to determine the urban heat island (UHI) effect for land use policy planning. In particular, the relationship between aquifer temperature changes and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) were analyzed since rising water temperatures may affect the chemistry and microbiology of the surface and subsurface systems, which could result in a negative impact on human health—especially if drinking water is from the groundwater source.
