Mānoa Campus, Tokioka Room, Moore 319 Add to Calendar

Daren Kamali is the ninth Fulbright–Creative New Zealand Writer-in-Residence at the Center for Pacific Islands Studies. During this lunchtime seminar, Daren will share experiences that have inspired and influenced his career as a creative writer and performer. Born in Fiji, Kamali traces his ancestry to Wallis and Futuna, and he has lived in Aotearoa/New Zealand since 1992. Drawing from his pan-Pacific experience, he will discuss what it means to be a Pacific poet in Aotearoa/New Zealand and internationally, focusing on his work as a teacher, cofounder of South Auckland Poets Collective, and cofounder of Nui Navigations, a charitable organization that supports poetry programs throughout Aotearoa/New Zealand. Daren will also perform two poems to illustrate the ways he infuses his Fijian language and draws upon chants, songs, and oral traditions.
