***************

January 2007, Hawai'i state legislators passed the Resolution …. “that September 21 of each year shall be known and recognized as “Peace Day” to promote peace programs, improve international relations, and increase educational awareness of peace…All citizens shall be encouraged to observe and celebrate the blessings of peace and endeavor to create peace on peace day.”

On April 18, 2007, the Governor signed House Bill 345 into law as Act 23, which made Hawaii the first state in the United States to officially recognize the United Nation's International Day of Peace, now celebrated in more than 200 countries worldwide.

In establishing Peace Day Hawai'i, state legislators united in asking the people of Hawai’i, as the United Nations General Assembly asked the peoples of the world, to devote a specific time to concentrate their efforts throughout the Hawaiian Islands in promoting the ideals and practices of peace in all viable ways devoted to strengthening and sustaining peace within oneself, in relation with others, in honor of the environment and commitment to global unity.
