European Encounters with Islam in Asia

September 28, 9:00am - 4:00pm
Manoa Campus, Asia Pacific Room, Hawai'i Imin Conference Center Add to Calendar

The beginning of the global economy in the sixteenth century produced many unexpected outcomes, but perhaps none more surprising to Europeans than the success of Muslim peoples throughout Asia. While scholars have paid increasing attention to the discourse of European encounters with the Muslim Empires of the Middle East, the European experiences throughout Asia, including the Indonesian islands and Mindanao, challenge assumptions of European “progress” in the Ottoman Empire, Safavid Iran, or Mughal India. Examining the strategies European merchants, travelers, and envoys employed across the spectrum of Muslim societies in Asia will shed new light on these encounters in Asia.

Workshop papers will be pre-circulated to allow for in-depth discussions over the two days of the workshop. Please contact the conference organizers, Matt Romaniello (mpr@hawaii.edu) or Matt Lauzon (mlauzon@hawaii.edu) to confirm your attendance and receive a copy of the papers.
