UH Manoa Campus Events Calendar
Bollywood Mondays: 'Deewaar' (1975)October 8, 3:30pm - 6:30pm
Manoa Campus, Hawai'i Institute of Geophysics auditorium (HIG 110)
By 1975, the year that Indira Gandhi declared ‘The Emergency,’ India had found itself a new hero. In classic films like 'Sholay' (Flames) and 'Deewaar' (The Wall), Amitabh Bachchan’s ‘angry young man’ characters raged against a corrupt system in an unjust world, in the process establishing the actor as a smoldering icon of male sexuality.
'Deewaar' tells the story of two brothers who choose different life paths, set against the unrest and struggles of life in 1970s Bombay. The younger, Ravi (superstar Shashi Kapoor), becomes a police office. The elder, Vijay (megastar Bachchan), trades in the futility of his dockyard job to take up smuggling. Holding the family together is the brothers’ shared love for their widowed mother (Nirupa Roy). Featuring plenty of romance, dhishoom dhishoom (fisticuffs), and funky 1970s shtyle, 'Deewaar' ranks among the most influential Bollywood movies of all time.
*Free* Indian food will be served at intermission, generously provided by the student organization Lovers of South Asian Cultures with support from the UH SAPFB. This is the sixth movie in the 11th UH Bollywood film series, running every Monday this fall. For a copy of the full semester film series schedule, please see the contact information below.
