Looking for Edward Gorey

November 1, 12:00pm - 1:15pm
Mānoa Campus, Henke Hall 325 Add to Calendar

Joseph Stanton’s recent book, Looking for Edward Gorey, is the result of many years of searching for Gorey. Aided by Hamilton Library’s John Corolla collection, one of the largest assemblages of Goreyana in the world, Stanton has endeavored to come to understandings of this ingenious artist/author whose eccentric books transcend categories: melding, for instance, murder mysteries and abecedariums; British nonsense rhymes and French surrealism. Some of Stanton’s research fed into a 2010 exhibition held in the University of Hawai‘i Art Gallery, but his search for Gorey continues.

Joseph Stanton’s publications include Looking for Edward Gorey (2011), The Important Books: Children’s Picture Books as Art and Literature (2005), and Imaginary Museum: Poems on Art (1999). He has also published three other books of poetry and a biography of Stan Musial. His works as an editor include A Hawaiʻi Anthology. His essays and poems have appeared in Michigan Quarterly Review, Children’s Literature, The Lion & the Unicorn, Art Criticism, American Art, Journal of American Culture, Poetry, Harvard Review, Image, Ekphrasis, and many other journals. He is a Professor of American Studies and Art History at UH Mānoa.
