Deoxygenation in the tropical Indian Ocean during the past 60 years: spatial distribution and implication for better prediction

Abstract: Suboxic water with dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration less than 5 μmol/kg is important for studying denitrification in the upper ocean. This study illustrates even a weak trend of deoxygenation in the upper ocean can lead to expansion of suboxic water in the Arabian Sea. It also shows a potential pitfall in over-estimating the impact of deoxygenation in a numerical model that has a biased low DO in the Bay of Bengal. Considering false suboxic water in the bay remains a common feature in most outputs of Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5), three potential causes are identified, which should be verified by global ocean general circulation models (OGCMs).
