Bollywood Mondays: 'Dev. D' (2009)November 19, 3:30pm - 6:30pm
Mānoa Campus, Hawai'i Institute of Geophysics Auditorium (HIG 110)
Can Bollywood do quirky and postmodern? 'Dev D.' stars the newest Indian indie film heartthrob Abhay Deol in this generation's take on the classic Bengali novella and oft-remade Hindi film, 'Devdas'.
Because they come from different castes, Dev and his childhood love, Paro (Mahie Gill), are not allowed to marry. After Paro's family sends her away to wed an older, wealthy widower, Dev despairs. He soon meets prostitute Chanda (Kalki Koechlin) and gradually spirals down into a life of overindulgence. With its surreal cinematography and dizzying editing, 'Dev D.' is a groundbreaking Bollywood film despite rooting itself in the 'Devdas' text and the traditional themes of love, marriage, and encounters between India and the West.
*Free* Indian food will be served at intermission, generously provided by the student organization Lovers of South Asian Cultures with support from the UHM SAPFB. This is the eleventh movie in the 11th UHM Bollywood film series, running every Monday this fall.
