Sokoage NPO Presentation: From Tokoku to the World
December 6, 3:30pm - 4:30pmMānoa Campus, HELP Program, Lower Campus Portables, Makai Campus Room 16-1
The Great East Japan Earthquake occurred nearly a year and a half ago in March 2011, but relief efforts are still needed and the struggle to recover goes on.
Sokoage is a non-profit organization dedicated to long-term disaster relief. Their volunteers have been in the disaster-stricken city of Kesennuma, Miyagi since the tragedy, distributing relief goods, cleaning up the dirt and debris, caring for those in temporary shelters, tutoring children who lost their homes, and much more.
During their time in Kesennuma, the Sokoage volunteers have seen the kind support and generosity the world has offered to Japan. Sokoage would like to use the JAL Honolulu Marathon weekend to spread their message of thanks from the disaster zone to the world.
Sokoage co-founder, Yusuke Saito, will be coming to the UH Manoa Hawaii English Language Program (HELP) on December 6th to deliver their message of thanks. Mr. Saito will be presenting on Sokoage’s volunteer efforts, and hopes that people will listen and learn from their experiences. Azusa Kumagai, a girl who lost her home in the tsunami, will present her first-hand experience with the disaster. Mr. Saito will also present on the current situation and continuing problems in Kesennuma, hoping to bring people’s awareness back to the area as Sokoage returns to Japan after the marathon to continue their relief efforts.
